Omar Abdel-Ghaffar

Omar Abdel-Ghaffar is a PhD candidate in the History and Middle East Studies program. He is primarily interested in Mamluk hinterlands and agricultural populations; their relationships to each other, to the law, to various networks of authority, and to the land. Originally from Alexandria, Egypt, he received his BA from the University of California, Davis, in political science, and his MA in Islamic studies from Columbia University, where he wrote a thesis on urban riots in Mamluk Cairo and Damascus.
