PhD Candidate in History and Middle East Studies
Jordan Cannon
Jordan Cannon entered the joint History & Middle Eastern Studies PhD program in 2020. Her research interests include Ottoman and Turkish social, cultural, urban, and architectural history. In particular, she plans to research fires in early modern Istanbul and how they impacted the city’s social fabric. She is also interested in how the form and content of historical narratives -- from gazi epics to the works of Reşad Ekrem Koçu -- shape and are shaped by their sociopolitical and cultural contexts. Lastly, she also hopes to study intellectual and art-historical interactions between the Ottoman and Chinese worlds. She holds a BA in History and Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies from Columbia University.
