The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to announce that the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) will offer, for the first time this fall, a secondary concentration in Middle East studies. This is the first undergraduate program at Harvard focused specifically on the modern Middle East, an area of prolonged and growing student interest. Though offered through NELC, the field will allow students to take courses from several departments, including Anthropology, History, History of Art and Architecture, and Government. Along with four elective courses, a “gateway” course, NEC 100: “Approaches to Middle Eastern Studies,” will be required. Coordinated by CMES Associate Director and NELC Lecturer Susan Kahn, NEC 100 will introduce interdisciplinary approaches to studying the Middle East.
