Harvard Crimson article on upcoming Outreach Center comic-making workshop

April 28, 2011

In an April 26 article titled “Comics Artists Discuss Islam,” the Harvard Crimson describes the upcoming May 29th comic making drop-in workshop sponsored by the Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies Outreach Center and the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Islamic Studies Program. The free public workshop, in addition to providing techniques and strategies for creating graphic narratives, will include Skype conversations with comic artists working in the Middle East at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00pm.

Quoting event co-organizer Krystina Friedlander (of the Bin Talal Islamic Studies Program) and Outreach Center director Paul Beran, the Crimson article describes the format and impetus of the Friday workshop, as well as its place in the Outreach Center’s yearlong programming around the role of comics and graphic novels in teaching and learning about the Middle East and Muslim communities.

That programming will wrap up for the semester on Saturday, April 30th, with a day-long event comprising two panel discussions featuring scholars and activists. Outreach Center Curriculum Coordinator Anna Mudd, who has led the Outreach Center’s work around comics, said, “These two events will be a wonderful capstone to the year, providing the opportunity for participants to both express their own stories within this medium as well as engage critically with innovative contemporary art being produced about and within the Middle East.”
