To meet student demand for upper-level Arabic instruction beyond the fourth year, the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations has added a two-semester fifth-year Arabic course, Arabic Five, to the Arabic language program. The fall portion of the course (Arabic 242ar) will be taught by Arabic Preceptor Sami Alkyam, who is joining the Arabic program this fall.
Other new courses this semester include a course on the Arab revolutions taught by Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Professor in Contemporary Islamic Thought and Life Malika Zeghal, and two courses taught by recent CMES PhD Arbella Bet-Shlimon:
- The Modern Middle East 120 – The Arab Revolutions: Popular Uprisings and Political Transformations, Malika Zeghal
- History 1888 – The Modern Persian Gulf Region: Politics, Economy and Society, Arbella Bet-Shlimon
- History 78e – Cities and Borderlands in the History of the Modern Middle East, Arbella Bet-Shlimon (primarily for undergraduates)
