Dec. 15/16: Conference on "Muslims in Europe and in the United States: A Transatlantic Comparison"

December 5, 2006

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to announce that it will co-sponsor an upcoming conference entitled, Muslims in Europe and in the United States: A Transatlantic Comparison, organized by Dr Jocelyne Cesari, Research Associate at CMES. The Conference will bring European and American scholars into dialogue on different aspects of the consequences of the war on terror on Muslims in Europe and in the United States, the influence of secularism and multiculturalism, and the importance of the media and political discourse on Islam.

Co-sponsored by the Center for European Studies, the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School, the French Consulate in Boston, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York City, The German Consulate, and the Spanish Consulate, the Conference is based on a six-nation study currently being pursued under the auspices of a research project of the European Commission entitled, “Challenge: Changing Landscape of Security and Liberty in Europe.” This research project, which focuses on Muslim communities in Europe after 9/11, provides the basic framework for the Conference, which aims to offer a comparative perspective and directions for future comparative research.

The Conference will span two days – Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16 – and will take place at the Center for European Studies, 27 Kirkland Street, Cambridge, MA. Further information and free conference registration can be accessed on the CES website: https://ces.fas.harvard.edu/
