CMES students present papers at conferences
Four CMES students in the History and Middle East Studies Program have had papers accepted for conferences this year. In October, Kathryn Schwartz attended the 2009 Cryptologic History Symposium, held at Johns Hopkins, to present her paper “The Academic, Poetic and Militarised Impetuses behind Medieval Arabic Cryptology’s Development”. James Esdaile presented his paper “The Coast of Interest?: South Arabian Territoriality in the Context of British Imperial Decline” at the 2010 Freie Universitat, Berlin Conference on Imperial Territoriality in January. Asher Orkaby will present a paper on April 22 in Washington D.C. at the 2010 GWU-LSE-UCSB International Graduate Student Conference on the Cold War. His paper is on the Kennedy administration's policy during the Yemen Civil War, specifically, Kennedy's relationship with Nasser. And Abigail Krasner Balbale is scheduled to present a paper entitled “Ibn Mardanish and the Politics of Religious Allegiance in 12th-Century Iberia” at the International Congress on Medieval Studies, to be held at Western Michigan University, in mid-May. Congratulations to Kathryn, James, Asher, and Abigail!
