Nil Tekgül
Visiting Post-doctoral Fellow, Center for Middle Eastern Studies
Nil Tekgül obtained her PhD from Bilkent University, Department of History, with her thesis titled “A Gate to the Emotional World of Pre-modern Ottoman Society: An Attempt to Write Ottoman History from 'the Inside-Out'” in May 2016. Her research explored the role of emotions on 3 different relational dimensions; state-subject relations, intra-communal relations, and familial ties, in the 17th and 18th centuries. She had her MA degree in history from the same university in 2011. She holds an undergraduate degree from Boğaziçi University, Department of Economics in 1987 and a MSF degree from Seattle University, Albers School of Business and Administration, Seattle, Washington in 1996 and was awarded with dean’s honor list.
Dr. Tekgül attended several conferences and workshops during her academic studies and has recently published an article in the Journal of Economic and Social History of the Orient, which suggests a new model to understand the complex actor networks within the Ottoman timar system. She taught Ottoman History and Ottoman Turkish and Paleography courses in Bilkent University. Her research interests include history of emotions, cultural studies, history of the ordinary people, and Ottoman law. She has three book projects. One of her projects is about emotions in Ottoman history suggesting a new methodological approach. She is also working on two other book projects, co-authored with Prof. Özer Ergenç, on Ottoman History and Ottoman Paleography.
