The South Asia Institute at Harvard, The Committee on Inner Asian and Altaic Studies at Harvard, The Department of Music at Harvard, The Department of South Asian Studies at Harvard, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Asia Center, and the Provostial Fund for Arts and Humanities present
The inaugural meeting of what will be the ICTM Study Group on the Music of Greater South Asia (ICTM: International Council of Traditional Music). The growing number of scholars of South Asian music internationally calls out for an independent organization focused on issues of performance and music specific to South Asia, as well as those that invite meaningful dialogue with scholars of musics in regions historically tied to South Asia. The current meeting brings together the special interest groups of South Asian Performing Arts (SAPA) and Iran and Central Asia (SIGMICA) within the Society for Ethnomusicology. The goals of this conference are to assess the current state of the field of South Asian musical studies, formulate a mission statement for our new scholarly entity, and make plans for regular, international meetings in the coming years.
Registration packets as well as internet access to online registration will be available on site. Attendees are encouraged to preregister for the economy rate of $15 at: http://www.ethnomusicology.org/group/SAPA_Conf.
