## Program Description

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) is pleased to offer an intensive Arabic study-abroad program in Tunis, Tunisia, at the CMES Tunis Office. Tunisia is an ideal study-abroad location, boasting immense cultural resources, a fantastic location in the heart of the Mediterranean, as well as a welcoming and inspiring environment.

Seats are limited and admission is competitive. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The program schedule is **May 21 to July 5, 2025**; these dates may be adjusted slightly.

The intensive course will meet from Monday to Friday, with ca. 17 contact hours per week. In addition, there will be an array of extracurricular activities, cultural excursions and academic events at the CMES Tunis Office. **Students are required to participate in all program activities, as well as attending all class meetings and completing all coursework.**

## Faculty

The 2025 program will be led by Dr. Nader Uthman, Director of the Modern Language Programs in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC).

The Arabic course will be co-taught by Dr. Uthman and Dr. Amr Madi, Preceptor in NELC.

## Coursework and Goals

This intensive, summer program covers the same coursework as second-year Arabic (BA and BB), in which both Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial are integrated. Course materials include the Al-Kitaab textbook series as well as bespoke materials.

**Students who successfully complete this session will be able to enroll third-year Arabic (131A) in the fall.**

## Target Audience and Eligibility

The program is intended for current undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard. Successful applicants should have one year of prior Arabic study (Arabic AA and Arabic AB) completed before starting the summer program. Students who have taken AA and AB in fall 2024 and spring 2025 have priority.

Participants must be enrolled at the time the program takes place. Students who are on leave or graduating in 2025 are not eligible.

## Funding

CMES is pleased to announce that successful applicants will be awarded a scholarship that covers air travel, room and board.

## Course Credit

**Please note this is not a credit-bearing course.** The goal of this program is to provide a funded, intensive study-abroad opportunity and equip students to enroll in third-year Arabic in fall 2025.
