Tunisia Winter Study Excursion

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies offers a winter study excursion to Tunisia. This three-week itinerary, based in the city of Tunis, focuses on the history and culture of Tunisia and how they intersect with landscape and urbanism. The field-based program is intended for students whose primary focus is on North African and Middle Eastern studies. The program is open to graduate students across Harvard’s Schools. Undergraduates who are concentrating on fields related to North Africa and the Middle East are also eligible to apply, with priority given to students in their junior or senior year. Participants must be enrolled as students at the time the program takes place.

The January 2024 program will be led by Gareth Doherty, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, with Sihem Lamine, Associate Director of the CMES Tunisia Office.

The excursion is scheduled from January 3 to January 19. A predeparture meeting will be held during reading week.

All major costs, including travel to and from Boston to Tunis, lodging, meals, and local travel will be covered by CMES. Students with non-US citizenship will be responsible for all necessary visas.

Applications are due Friday, November 17, in CARAT. The following materials are required:

  • One letter of recommendation from a Harvard faculty member (preferably from a field related to Middle Eastern studies
  • One-page statement of purpose
  • Transcript (unofficial grade report from my.harvard is acceptable)
