CMES receives 2014-2018 FLAS funding

CMES is very pleased to announce that we have been awarded a Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the 2014–2018 grant cycle. FLAS grants provide fellowship funding to enable meritorious undergraduate and graduate students to pursue advanced training in modern foreign languages and research in related fields. CMES-awarded FLAS fellowships enable Harvard students from CMES’s graduate programs and across the university to study advanced Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish at Harvard and at approved summer study abroad programs....

CMES to host Center for Arabic Study Abroad

CMES is delighted to announce that beginning in June 2014 it will serve as the new host of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA). CASA is a year-long intensive advanced level Arabic program held at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. (Due to recent political events in Egypt, the program has been temporarily relocated to the Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman, Jordan for the current academic year.) New classes and new faces in the Arabic language program

Upper-level Arabic language students have a new option for continuing their language studies this year with the introduction of Arabic Five, a two-semester fifth-year Arabic language course. Added to meet student demand for upper-level Arabic instruction beyond the fourth year, this new course is a sign of the continuing popularity of Arabic language study at Harvard, at advanced levels in particular. CMES Outreach holds Arabic teacher training program for undergraduate students

Earlier this summer, twenty-nine undergraduate students from three countries and ten states came to Harvard’s campus for advanced training in Arabic language and culture teaching. They were here for an intensive three-week workshop, the Arabic Institute for the Next Generation, run through the Outreach Center at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
