Wesan Amer

Currently, I am a Fulbright scholar and visiting researcher at Harvard University’s Center for Middle East Studies. I will be working on social media communication and politics related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Since 2021, I have also been the dean of Faculty of Communication and Languages at Gaza University in Palestine. I got my MA at Anglia Ruskin University-Cambridge in the UK (2008-09), PhD from Hamburg University in Germany (2011-15), and EU-Marie Curie fellow and post-doctoral researcher at Newcastle University (2017-20). My teaching and research experiences are strongly grounded in the field of linguistics, discourse analysis, digital mass and intercultural communication, social/digital media, and (critical) discourse studies. In my research projects and lectures, I address issues in culture, social/online media, religions and geo-politics in their interrelation, and hyper/inter-connectivity to the Middle East region. This is done through studying social media platforms, big data and online media productions. Examples of my research studies are, but not limited to, 1) the Islamic State’s social media practices in mobilizing young people online, 2) radicals’ self-representation online, 3) representation of social actors in international news press, and 4) discourse of refugees on social media. My teaching competences have been built throughout many years of teaching or assisting in teaching different modules in various academic environments in the Middle East, Europe, and the UK. For example, at Gaza University, I taught MA modules on Specialized English for Media, Special Subjects in Media, among other modules. At Newcastle University, I co-taught a module on political communication and media while participating and contributing to Digital Discourses module. Also, I supervised MA dissertations.
