John P. Murphy

John (Jack) Murphy is a second year AM student in Middle East Studies. He was born in the US and grew up in Brussels, Dubai, and London. He graduated from Oxford University with a first-class honours degree in Arabic with Hebrew, where he wrote a dissertation comparing Arabic and Hebrew poetry pre- and post-1948. He intends to use these languages to complement a focus in the region's modern history and politics, specifically issues related to Israel-Palestine, as well as to delve into the early medieval history of the region. His research interests include medieval Islamic history, environmental history, and the impact of natural disasters on politics, as well as Israel-Palestine and Middle Eastern international relations.
