DESCRIPTION:<p>CMES is pleased to present a talk in Arabic with</p><p><strong>Anton Shammas</strong><br>Professor of Middle Eastern Literature, Departments of Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies, University of Michigan; author and translator of English, Arabic, and Hebrew.<!--break-->A Palestinian writer and translator of English, Arabic and Hebrew, Anton Shammas has been affiliated with the University of Michigan since 1997, as a Professor of Middle Eastern Literature in the Departments of Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies. His essays and articles have been published in <em style="font-size: initial;">Harper’s, The New York Review of Books</em>, and the <em style="font-size: initial;">New York Times Magazine</em>. He is the author of three books of poems in Arabic and Hebrew, a play in Arabic, and a novel, <em style="font-size: initial;">Arabesques</em>, published in Hebrew in 1986. Upon its publication in English by Harper &amp; Row in 1988, <em style="font-size: initial;">Arabesques</em> was chosen by the editors of <em style="font-size: initial;">The New York Times Book Review</em> as one of the best seven fiction works of 1988.
