He received an AB in 1958 in history and his doctorate in linguistics in 1964 from Harvard University and he was a professor of linguistics at San Diego State University for over 40 years, including time as department chair. His primary interests included phonology, discourse, syntax, and Turkish, Native American and Southeast Asian languages. He also chaired SDSU's Phi Beta Kappa academic honors society. He is the author of <em>Turkish Grammar </em>(MIT Press, 1976), a scholarly textbook still in use today.
