#  Are Animals “Things”?

 CMES Steering Committee member [Kristen Stilt](/people/kristen-stilt), Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and Director of the HLS Islamic Legal Studies Program, talks to *[Harvard Magazine](http://harvardmagazine.com/2016/03/are-animals-things)* about animals' status under the law, her survey course on the growing field of animal law, and the new [Harvard Animal Law and Policy Program](http://animal.law.harvard.edu) at HLS. "We know how law *doesn’t* work for animals," Stilt says, " but we have no clear idea yet about how it *should*."
