**The CMES Arabic Lecture Series** presents

**Dr. Abdulgaleel Ahmed**
Affiliate, Department of Anthropology, Harvard University; Middle East Project Specialist, Harvard Library; Research Fellow, The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) Global Academy, Washington, DC

*Please note:* this talk will be held in Arabic.

In this talk, Dr. Abdulgaleel Ahmed will take us on an enlightening journey to explore the pivotal role of language in shaping and negotiating identity within two Yemeni diaspora communities—one in Hyderabad, India, and the other in New York, USA. These "Little Yemens" offer a compelling lens through which to examine how language both preserves cultural heritage and adapts to new sociolinguistic landscapes. By comparing these communities, Dr. Ahmed will delve into how their unique linguistic practices influence identity formation and affect their integration into host societies. This discussion sheds light on the dynamic interaction between language, identity, and migration, offering broader insights into diaspora experiences and cultural adaptation.

Dr. Abdulgaleel Ahmed is a passionate linguist, educator, and advocate for the transformative power of language. With a PhD in Linguistics and Phonetics from the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad, India, Ahmed has dedicated his career to unraveling the rich complexities of language theory, linguistic anthropology, and applied linguistics. His academic foundation is bolstered by a Postgraduate Diploma in Translation from EFLU and a CELTA Certificate from the University of Cambridge, underscoring his dedication to teaching and connecting across language barriers.

Dr. Ahmed's journey as a scholar and educator has taken him from postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia University to Harvard University, where he taught courses in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), NELC Department. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities. Currently, as a Middle East Project Specialist at Harvard Library, he applies his expertise to bridge cultural divides and enhance access to Middle Eastern resources.
