**Anton Shammas**  
Professor of Middle Eastern Literature, Departments of Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies, University of Michigan; author and translator of English, Arabic, and Hebrew.A Palestinian writer and translator of English, Arabic and Hebrew, Anton Shammas has been affiliated with the University of Michigan since 1997, as a Professor of Middle Eastern Literature in the Departments of Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies. His essays and articles have been published in *Harper’s, The New York Review of Books*, and the *New York Times Magazine*. He is the author of three books of poems in Arabic and Hebrew, a play in Arabic, and a novel, *Arabesques*, published in Hebrew in 1986. Upon its publication in English by Harper &amp; Row in 1988, *Arabesques* was chosen by the editors of *The New York Times Book Review* as one of the best seven fiction works of 1988. He is currently working on a book project - *Blind Spots and Other Essays on Translation.*
