 **Bassam Haddad**  
Director, Middle East Studies Program, George Mason University; Visiting Adjunct Professor, Georgetown University

 Bassam Haddad is Director of the [Middle East Studies Program](http://middleeast.gmu.edu/about) and teaches in the [Department of Public and International Affairs](http://pia.gmu.edu/people/bhaddad) at George Mason University, and is Visiting Professor at Georgetown University. He is the author of *Business Networks in Syria: The Political Economy of Authoritarian Resilience* (Stanford University Press, 2011). Bassam recently published “The Political Economy of Syria: Realities and Challenges,” in *Middle East Policy* and is currently editing a volume on *Teaching the Middle East After the Arab Uprisings*, a book manuscript on pedagogical and theoretical approaches.  
  
Bassam serves as Founding Editor of the [*Arab Studies Journal*](http://www.arabstudiesjournal.org/) a peer-reviewed research publication and is co-producer/director of the award-winning documentary film, [*About Baghdad*](http://www.aboutbaghdad.com/), and director of a [critically acclaimed](http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/410408/Arabs-and-Terrorism/overview) film series on [*Arabs and Terrorism*](http://arabsandterrorism.com/), based on extensive [field research/interviews](http://arabsandterrorism.com/interviewees.cfm?view=All%20Interviewees). More recently, he directed a film on Arab/Muslim immigrants in Europe, titled [*The "Other" Threat*](http://www.theotherthreat.com/). Bassam also serves on the Editorial Committee of [*Middle East Report*](http://www.merip.org/) and is Co-Founder/Editor of [*Jadaliyya*](http://www.jadaliyya.com/) Ezine. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at Stanford's Program for Good Governance and Political Reform in the Arab World. Bassam is the Executive Director of the [Arab Studies Institute](http://www.arabstudiesinstitute.org/), an umbrella for four organizations dealing with knowledge production on the Middle East.
