Architect, writer, and lecturer at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University Earlier this year, the Dubai Frame opened to visitors with some controversy: the $68 million folly was declared a forgery in a city so often described as “fake.” A hapless architect won a design competition in 2009 with a 150-meter high “timeframe structure that celebrates the city” but then saw it completed without him. Moreover, he accuses the city of defaming his frame. Beyond addressing the architect’s grievances, the presentation will seek out global and urban allegories set within Dubai’s frame. Revealed will be a fable about appropriation, reproduction, and the control of a mass-market image encased in “the biggest picture frame on the planet.”
