Dr. Samer El-Karanshawy is a (Sunni) scholar of Twelver Shi’ism and Lebanon, respectively the subject and site of his book-in-the-making. Dr. Karanshawy holds an MA and an M.Sc. (respectively in Sociology / Anthropology and Social Anthropology, from the American University in Cairo and the University of Oxford) and a Doctorate in Social Anthropology (also from the University of Oxford). He is currently the Carnegie Centennial Fellow at the School of Public Affairs at the American University in Washington DC, where he is working on a book manuscript, which, based on fieldwork and textual analysis, examines the commemoration of Imam Husayn in Lebanon. Dr. El-Karanshawy is also working on an academic journal article on perceptions of Lebanese Shi’i history. Last but not least, he is a regular contributor to Arab newspapers and websites, namely *Al-Hayat*, and more recently the website Daraj; these Arabic writings address, among other issues, questions of political culture.

 *Light lunch will be served.*
