A memorial service for Shahab Ahmed, friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor to many in the CMES community, who sadly passed away on September 17 at the untimely age of 48, will be held Sunday, November 15, 2015, from 4:00 to 5:30pm at the Memorial Church at Harvard University, followed by a reception. Ahmed, a noted scholar of Islamic studies, enjoyed a long association with Harvard, beginning as a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows (2000-2003) and later as Associate Professor of Islamic Studies, Lecturer on Law and Research Fellow in Islamic Legal Studies at Harvard Law School, and most recently as an Associate at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture. A workshop devoted to Ahmed's book What Is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic, forthcoming from Princeton University Press, will be held at Harvard on April 29, 2016. Ahmed is also remembered by the Alwaleed Islamic Studies Program, by the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, by his friend and Harvard Law School colleague Noah Feldman, and by Beena Sarwar.
