Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships

The FLAS Fellowship program is provided by the U.S. Department of Education and supports graduate training in approved foreign languages and related area studies. The fellowship competition is held annually for year-long and summer fellowships, and is open to U.S . citizens and Permanent Residents whose interests seriously involve regional studies. Applications are available on request at the GSAS Admissions and Financial Aid Office or on the GSAS Website. For the 2014-2018 grant cycle, contingent upon annual funding from the U.S Department of Education, CMES has been awarded $276,000 per year for each of the four years of the cycle broken down as follows: $231,000 per year for seven (7) academic year graduate fellowships and $45,000 per year for six (6) graduate fellowships.

Approved Middle East FLAS languages include: Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Uzbek

Academic Year FLAS Grants

Academic year awards are open to continuing (already registered), as well as incoming students admitted for the following academic year. These fellowships provide a tuition grant plus stipend. To be eligible for these awards, students must be actively involved in language training, area or professional studies, or dissertation research. For use of fellowships overseas, students must be enrolled in an advanced language program overseas accredited by a U.S. institution, or pursue dissertation research that cannot be done in the United States, provided there is affiliation with an overseas institution of higher education or appropriate organization in the host country.

Summer FLAS Grants

Open only to continuing (already registered) students. These fellowships may be used in the United States or overseas. In either case, the U.S. Department of Education stipulates that FLAS fellowships may be used only in a certain number of accredited learning institutions. Overseas, these are programs either created or run by a U.S. institution. Students must use their FLAS award in an accredited advanced language program overseas that will provide the equivalent of one academic year of language training. Applications are due in late January, and should be sent to:
