From 2000 to 2014, CMES was the home of the Moroccan Studies Program, the only research and teaching program in the United States dedicated to the study of Morocco and North Africa (the Maghreb). The purpose of the Moroccan Studies Program was to promote teaching, research and publication of sources on Morocco and North Africa across disciplines, including history, politics, anthropology, literature and the arts.
The Moroccan Studies Program was funded through the generosity of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Kingdom of Morocco.
Past Activities included:
- Courses on Moroccan history, society, culture and literature
- The Moroccan Studies Forum monthly lecture series
- Academic exchanges involving Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Libyan and American professors
- Student fellowships for Harvard undergraduate and graduate students for independent study in Morocco
- Conferences and seminars on Maghrebi topics
- Scholarly publications based on Program activities
- Advanced research in the social sciences and the humanities
